LOST FOR WORDS

Good Morning Readers:

I’m not sure where to start.  There’s been so much happening lately, in the news, in our world. It’s hard to think about poetry, when it seems the world is so confused and hurting.

There is so much conflict in the world, and so many people sick and dying from Covid-19, and so many opinions about everything.  Who is interested in poetry or poets?   Well, I think that this may be the perfect time to visit your local library.  Take a morning out for yourself and just browse in the library; in the poetry section. This will have a calming influence on your day.  It’s not a doctor’s appointment, or a dentist’s appointment, no, it’s something that you want to do for yourself, and it won’t hurt!  If you see any poetry books you like at the library, then take them out and enjoy reading them, in your own time.

Analyse some of the poetry.  What is the poet really trying to say? Is he or she sad, are they finding life difficult, or are they too busy, enjoying being in love?  This is an investigation worth doing, I think.  Poets of the 18th 19th centuries are not as easy to understand  and will prove more difficult.  It’s out of our realm.

Which poets are somber and sad, and which poets are galant, and mysterious.   I think that by getting to know the poet and the poetry, is important.  To know the meaning of the poetry, is important,  otherwise there is no point in reading it, in the first place.  It gives you more insight into the mind of the poet.  It’s good to know about the poet’s history, then the poetry becomes clearer to you.

Later, you could write a small synopsis of what you think the poem is all about.  Keep it brief, but I think you will find this exercise rewarding, and you will learn so much more.

If you look at the back of my poetry book, The Mists of Time, which was published by Austin Macauley, April  30, 2021, you will see each poem has a synopsis, or sometimes it is called a ‘note’.  This tells you in short, what the poem is about.  This will give you some ideas.

You can buy my book online, and in most bookshops.  I hope you will enjoy it, and perhaps write a book review on https://www.austinmacauley.com/book/mists-time  website. Don’t forget, I also have an e-book, you may prefer this format.

All the best,

Anne
