RICK STEIN – HIS LOVE OF POETRY AND COOKING

Good Morning Readers:

Did you know that Rick Stein, the popular English chef, often quoted poetry at different moments in his TV cooking programs?

He is a bit of a romantic, and he loves his poets and poetry. Rick loves to intertwine poetry throughout special moments during a program, when he thinks it will fit the narrative. This gives it a bit of a twist, a different ingredient.

He has read poetry all his life. This is why it comes so naturally to him, to quote a poem, or indeed have a well used poetry book with him;  he will quote a passage from a poem he feels is fitting.  This brings a richness of thought into a TV moment.  Rick and Chalky, would sometimes go out in an old fishing boat, Rick discussing the catch of the day with a fisherman; Chalky, a constant companion. We miss him.

I was watching an older program of Rick Stein’s the other day.  He took out a trusty poetry book, and started to read it, sitting beside the sea in Cornwall.  The poet was a lady, and the poem was, in fact, a recipe.  The poem was all about beautiful fresh ingredients, and how delicious they were, when combined.  Rick enjoyed this poem, and decided to make the dish.  He liked the outcome.  As I have said, poetry can be about many subjects, culinary included.

We know how much Rick enjoyed visiting fish markets around the world.  He just loved sitting beside the water, talking about a particular fish and how he would cook it.

I enjoyed the series where Rick took a barge trip for 6 weeks, from Bordeaux to Marseille along the Canal du Midi, a region where I used to live.  So, naturally, I loved the Mediterranean recipes Rick prepared along the way.

Rick and Cornwall are perfect together.  He has a sense of humour and wit, which his viewers love.   Rick finds time to do good work within his community; holding poetry reading evenings to help the homeless in Cornwall; with help from other well known celebrities.  This shows us how poetry is such an integral part of our lives.

If you like reading poetry, you may enjoy my book, The Mists of Time. Recently published by Austin Macauley.  It’s a poetry book, sorry, no recipes, but I’m working on it!  It’s great that Rick loves poetry and quotes it often. He’s an inspiration to us all.

Poetry is an ingredient in our every day lives.  A dash here, a pinch there, mix it with love, and you have the perfect dish.  Bon appetit!

Enjoy life!
